The second day was spent working on some sketches for a video inspired by some of the implications of algorithmic video editing and the work of Ivan Pavlov. This residency centres around the work of four thinkers and their relationship to artistic production and fordism:
Henry Ford
Antonio Gramsci
Frederick Taylor
Ivan Pavlov
The connections between these four characters can be seen in the essay What Is "New" About "New Fordism". Pavlov was instrumental in the move towards the conception of the body as a machine and, thus, in some ways shares an intellectual lineage with that of the biomechanics movement, of which Taylor was a major figure. In the film we worked on today, unconditioned responses are used to create a cinematic narrative for unskilled actors. This piece is the companion work to the music-theatre work "Conditioned" which we will work on later in the residency.
The New Fordist Organization GEMAK residency was supported by GEMAK and a Stroom PRO Kunstprojecten Grant.
